Septic Tip #1:  Repairing Leaking Faucets and Toilets

To detect toilet leaks, add several drops of food dye to the toilet tank and see if the dye bleeds into the bowl.  Conserve water to reduce the amount of wastewater that must be treated and filtered by your system. Doing laundry over several days puts less stress on your system.  Install risers (access extensions between the tank access lid and ground level), if necessary.  To accelerate the growth of desirable aerobic bacteria we strongly recommend using additives, a proven system additive that adds enzymes and bacteria that convert scum and waste to liquid.

Septic Tip #2: There Are Things You Cannot Put Into Your System

Don't use a garbage disposal, or at least limit its usage. Disposals increase the solids, so more frequent cleaning is suggested.

Do not put any: coffee grounds, disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, cigarette butts, fats, grease or oil, paints, thinners, photographic solutions, antibiotics, dental floss, kitty litter, tampons, condoms, paper towels, varnishes, waste oils, pesticides, gasoline, or antifreeze down your drains.   Don't use caustic drain openers for a clogged drain. Use boiling water or a snake to open clogs.

Septic Tip #3:   Landscaping, Trees, and Concrete

Be cognizant of where you are planting trees and placing concrete. Tree roots can cause a lot of significant and costly damage to septic systems. You want to be careful about your location. When extending patios or adding concrete slabs, make sure you do not place them over your tank lids. It is likely that the concrete will have to be cut and removed to gain access to your tank lids.

Septic Tip #4:   Servicing Your Filter

It is important to service your filter every twelve months. This maintenance will allow for your system to continue proper function as well as avoid clogs or corrosion within your septic system.
